BASHOF Scholarships

Oakland A's Salute to Youth Scholarship History

The Oakland A's and BASHOF are proud to support higher education for Bay Area students. The scholarships were established with the 1987 Oakland A's All-Star pre-game-clinic proceeds being designated to BASHOF. The original two $1,000 scholarships were matched by the Oakland A's in 2003. Recipients now receive $2,000 each for application toward college fees.

Each year, a scholarship committee reviews numerous applications from East Bay Youth Fund grantees, wishing to honor a female and/or male participant with the A's Salute to Youth Scholarhip award. The scholarship presentations have taken place at the annual BASHOF Enshrinement Banquet.

Rosenbaum Sportswriting Scholarship History

The Art Rosenbaum High School Sportswriting Award was born in 1990 when friends of the retiring San Francisco Chronicle Sports Editor gave him a party attended by more than 900 at the Fairmont Hotel. Herb Caen was master of ceremonies and principal speakers were Jim Plunkett, Nate Thurmond, Orlando Cepeda, Ken Venturi and Chronicle publisher Richard Thieriot.

Art's career began as a prep writer when still in high school, and in recent years he has been concerned that economic downsizing has eliminated many school papers. In his view, the school paper that reaches all students is the most important extra-curricular activity on campus. As an incentive to renew interest, the entire proceeds from the evening, $44,000, went into the Scholarship and became the core for the annual awards given to junior and senior writers.

Beau Venturi Scholarship History

Ken Venturi polished his golf game as a member of San Francisco's Lincoln High golf team and won the City championship three times. After winning the California state title three times, Venturi turned pro in 1956, won 14 PGA Tournaments and dramatically won the 1964 U.S. Open. His fame has grown in recent years as a pioneer golf commentator.

In his honor and as a memorial to his wife, the Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame has established the Beau Venturi Scholarship Fund. These scholarships will be awarded annually to the male and female winners of San Francisco's City High School Golf Championship.
