The Olympic Club – "Home of the 2012 U.S. Open"
- .
The 16th Annual Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame Golf Classic was held on Monday, October 24, 2011, at San Francisco's famed Olympic Club. On a brilliantly sunny day, more than 224 golfers took to the Lake and Ocean courses, with the golfers on the Lake Course given the additional challenge of playing the very same course the pros will be playing in next year's 2012 U.S. Open.
- Participants were treated to a bounty of treats upon check-in, including a U.S. Bank canvas tote bag and golf balls, a highly-coveted U.S. Open jacket (which many golfers donned immediately), a gift certificate from The Golf Mart, tasty Popchips snacks and a stainless steel water bottle courtesy of Dirito Brothers VW/Saab, which also provided a 2012 VW Passat as a Grand Prize for a Hole-In-One on each of the two courses.
Before heading to their designated holes in golf carts sponsored by Logitech, golfers sat in on the always popular Ken Venturi Golf Clinic, where the legendary golfer demonstrated useful golf techniques for participants to incorporate into their game. As the golfers ended their rounds, they headed to the Clubhouse and enjoyed a 19th Hole reception that included a silent auction featuring sports memorabilia and gift certificates for hotel stays and wine collections, among other items.
Following the reception, golfers enjoyed a delicious prime rib dinner in the main dining room as local broadcasters Fred LaCosse and Terry Lowry, returning again as Masters of Ceremony, presided over the evening program. San Francisco golf champions Ben Olsen and Kristi Shannon were awarded the Beau Venturi Memorial Scholarship by Ken Venturi, who was then honored in a special salute in commemoration of his 1964 U.S. Open victory at Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, Maryland. Four great packages were auctioned off live, and we saw spirited bidding for a San Francisco 49ers VIP package, a Big Horn Golf Vacation Package, U.S. Open Trophy Passes (along with the opportunity for a meet-and-greet with Roger Maltbie) and two tickets to the 2011 Masters in Augusta.
Thank you once again to all of our generous sponsors and golfers. A great day was had by all and more important, you helped us raise over $200,000 to "help kids play sports."
