The 31st Annual Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame Enshrinement Banquet was a truly memorable event. The program began with a special performance by Franc D’Ambrosio, The Phantom of the Opera, who sang a medley of songs from The Phantom, and then led the crowd in singing “God Bless America." It was breathtaking! After the opening, dinner was served, and the induction ceremonies followed. The 2010 Inductees were Olympic figure skating champion Brian Boitano, Oakland Athletics shortstop Bert “Campy” Campaneris, Oakland Raiders owner Al Davis, University of San Francisco soccer coach Stephen Negoesco and popular San Francisco 49ers receiver R. C. “Alley Oop” Owens. Presenters included former USF athletic director Bill Hogan, radio personality Marty Lurie, broadcasting legend John Madden, NBC Bay Area sports director Raj Mathai, and 49ers past president John McVay.
With a sell-out crowd at the Westin St. Francis, the 2010 Enshrinement Banquet raised nearly $200,000 for youth sports programs in the Bay Area. Michael Shepherd, president/CEO of Bank of the West, presided as banquet chairman; KTVU Fox 2 sports director Mark Ibanez served as master of ceremonies; Sister Rosemarie Nassif, president of Holy Names University, gave the invocation; and Lee Hammer, operations manager for Cumulus San Francisco, presented a check for $191,465 to the Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame Youth Fund from the Sports Auction proceeds. Richard Beleson, a wonderful BASHOF supporter, offered to donate $9,000 to the Youth Fund in order to bring the total auction proceeds over $200,000. Thank you Richard!
BASHOF alumni in attendance included Jennifer Azzi, Vida Blue, Dave Casper, Roger Craig, Joe Kapp, Craig Morton, Jim Otto, Jim Plunkett, John Ralston, Jerry Rice, Gordy Soltau, Bob St. Clair, Nate Thurmond, Y. A. Tittle and Kristi Yamaguchi.
